Mmmm, oh the memories.... my first modem was a 300 baud acoustic
coupler, then WOW! I managed to lay my hands on a DIDGTAL (the brand)
300/1200 non "AT" modem. Took us a few months to realise that that
bell 1200 to the non-us standard were actually cros workable !!

But the bleeding edge can be fun too, CairnsNet was the first in our
area utilising anything like a MAX, everyone else was using straight
analogue, we started at 28k8 whilst the opposition was just changing
over to 33k6, then we went that way too, struth, only a software
upgrade ;-) Then we set the local standard for k56. Only one other
(national) isp locally advertised 56000 and that was X2 and on their
bay hadn't arrived and then it didn't work. (I sometimes wonder
whether they every will ;-). As I was using MAx's, all of the rest of
the local guys went other ways, Cisco and Tigres. And they are
hurting still.
I nearly changed my base pop to a bay 5000, but shit they are having
problems, just we ascend only worse, and livingston in Australia ??
NO WAY folks, the reported problems I hear and complete lack of
response from the local distributor appears to make PM3 ownership a
joke.
Yes please Ascend, give US V.90 code to beta, for those of us foolish
enough, BUT please make it so we can turn it off if its too screwy.
And yes the Rockwell 1.60t code currently is GOOD. Our support calls
on hangups and dropouts have dropped by 95% and the rest can cleanly
be blamed on the users modems and revision code or maximum speed of
negiation AT+MS normally fixes those.
